A .577-450 MARTINI HENRY MK II ARTILLERY CARBINE MARKED TO THE SUSSEX ARTILLERY VOLUNTEERS, CIRCA 1880, SERIAL NO 62, 21 in. barrel with Ordnance proofs to breech, block and blade front sight, correct carbine pattern rear-sight, saw cut at breech, the barrel and action painted black overall, possibly government markings underneath, some pitting, two piece iron mounted walnut stock, the butt stamped with an Enfield Mk II 2nd class roundel, and with inset brass disc stamped '4 / 1894 / 1. S.X. A. / 62', forend with two bands the top band with bayonet lug, this carbine has a very good untouched stock, the carbine is better than most, it was originally a Mk II Martini Henry infantry rifle then modified to a Mk II carbine for the Militia Artillery, then at a later date relegated to drill purpose
